Congratulations to all of the teams that competed at our 2014 Regional Tournament! The final results for all problems are listed further down on this page. All first-place teams are invited to compete at the Virginia State Tournament in April.
We also presented four special awards at the Closing Ceremonies. The Ranatra Fusca Award represents the essence of Odyssey of the Mind and is presented to teams or individuals who exhibit exceptional creativity. OMER’s Award is presented to teams or individuals who particularly exemplify the spirit and philosophy of the Odyssey program, demonstrate exceptional skill or talent, or exhibit outstanding sportsmanship or teamwork. Here are the full announcements for those awards:
Ranatra Fusca Award – Terraset Elementary School, Driver’s Test Division 1
This team showed exceptional creativity in the concept and delivery of the Driver’s Test problem. The team chose ants as the driver and built the performance around Predators and Prey, a unit in their elementary school science curriculum. The vehicle had large leaves, and the GPS was a “Global Predator System,” which warned the ant driver of predator anteater hazards. The leaves were crafted from old curtains, sewn to a wire frame, and painted authentically with veins. The costumes showed 6-legged ants and an anteater’s proboscis. All of the costumes were hand sewn by the students. From a technical standpoint, the team used a recycled birthday card with a recording mechanism inside to fulfill the speaking GPS element. There was excellent unification of their theme, unexpected visuals, and concept. This Ranatra Fusca Award goes to the Division 1 team from Terraset Elementary.
Ranatra Fusca Award – Forestville Elementary School Team B, The Stackable Structure Division 1
This team showed exceptional creativity in building a working “chocolate” fountain. The construction of the fountain was extremely creative and complex, incorporating a sled, flower pot reservoir, salad bowl, colander, pipe, hoses, etc. The fountain even became a personage in the skit. A number of people thought that it was store bought, but it wasn’t. The fountain was central to the plot with the diabetic grandma’s chocolate craving and other team members holding her back. When the fountain was turned on, the judges nearby jumped back as the chocolate started flowing. This Ranatra Fusca Award goes to Division 1, Team B from Forestville Elementary.
OMER’S Award – Rachel Carson Middle School, Seeing is Believing Division 2
This OMER’s Award is for outstanding sportsmanship. One of our teams was thrilled to learn this week that some of their members had advanced to a sports championship game. Unfortunately, the game was today, and it conflicted with their performance times at our regional tournament. If they couldn’t make it, the game would be forfeited. Another team from a different school generously agreed to swap competition times with this team, so they ended up being able to compete here today and make it to their championship game. For their willingness to change their schedule at the last minute in the spirit of fair play to help one of their competitors, this OMER’s award goes to the Division 2 team from Rachel Carson Middle School.
OMER’S Award – Suzanne Webb, School Coordinator, Pine Spring Elementary
This OMER’s award is for one of our School Coordinators. When the trained judge for one of the school’s teams was unexpectedly sent to Europe on a business trip and wouldn’t return until last night on a red-eye, this School Coordinator immediately took responsibility for finding a replacement judge to go to the next training. When that was unsuccessful, she got in touch with me. I told her that we needed a spontaneous check-in supervisor, and her response was “I’m on it!” She was responsive to my emails and kept a positive attitude. When I was despairing of filling the position, she said she wasn’t giving up and found a volunteer just two days ago. This OMER’s award goes to Suzanne Webb, the coordinator from Pine Spring Elementary.
