Virginia Virtual Tournament Awards and Scores
Two special Odyssey of the Mind awards, the OMER award and the Ranatra Fusca were presented.
The OMER award may be given to coaches, team members, parents, officials or others who serve as positive examples or role models. These OMERs exemplify the spirit and philosophy of the Odyssey of the Mind showing outstanding sportmanship or astounding teamwork.
The first OMER award went to a person who was nominated last season, 2019-2020. This person is now in their 9th year coaching Odyssey of the Mind and has coached teams in divisions I, II, and III. Over the years, the person has coached 12 Odyssey teams and brought 6 teams to World Finals. But last year, in particular, his efforts seemed Herculean. He offered unwavering support and countless hours to ensure that his two teams’ Odyssey efforts would be effectively showcased. He taught his teams the power of creativity and teamwork, and how to use them to overcome obstacles, no matter how immense they may seem. His outstanding dedication exemplifies the spirit of Odyssey. This OMER went to last year’s coach from Battlefield High School, Michael Heilen.
The second OMER award went to two 8th graders in their third year on a Division II team. These two dedicated OMERs worked with their five other 6th-grade teammates. They took the reins and made sure that things were done and that all team members had responsibilities for specific tasks. Working in a virtual platform has its challenges, but they made sure that everyone felt welcome and knew they were an important part of their team. For their excellent communication and leadership skills while working with their virtual team, an OMER was awarded to Laon Sung and Lucas Amos from Benjamin Franklin Middle School.
The second type of award is the Ranatra Fusca which is given to teams of individuals who show exceptional creativity, either within or beyond the problem or solution. The Ranatra Fusca is awarded to encourage creative thinking and risk-taking.
The first Ranatra Fusca went to a Problem 5 team who created a device to allow for rapid and continuous launching of “snowballs” by their Killer Snow People. They had to re-engineer their first design mechanism to incorporate rubber bands for a faster release. When released, a hammer struck the ping pong balls that were in the chute to propel them. The crank plus wheel device the team designed and built enabled them to load ping pong balls into a feeder tube and launch from two ports on each of their snow people, with one team member turning the cranks quickly. There were no technical elements required in this problem, yet this team used this free-choice style element to create a snowball squall that enhanced the effect of their Killer Snow People. This winning team was the Problem 5 team from Riverside High School.
The final Ranatra Fusca was awarded to a team who, in a nod to the movie industry, created Hollywood in a Cul-de-sac. The creativity of this skit, the attention to detail, and the scope of the efforts used to carry it out created an immersive experience which was unparalleled this year. In addition, the judges felt that using a movie camera as the vehicle during the 2021 tournament was especially fitting in a year in which all Virtual Odyssey of the Mind solutions and performances had to be filmed. For their exceptional approach to and execution of style, the Ranatra Fusca went to the Problem 1 team from Belmont Ridge Middle School.
